چکیده

The cosmic ultraviolet (UV) ionizing background impacts the formation of dwarf galaxies in the low–redshift universe (z ∼< 3) by suppressing gas infall into galactic halos with circular velocities up to vcirc ∼ 75kms −1. Using a one–dimensional, spherically symmetric hydrodynamics code (Thoul & Weinberg 1995), we examine the effect of an ionizing background on low–mass galaxies forming at high redshifts (z ∼> 10). We find that the importance of photoionization feedback is greatly reduced, because (1) at high redshift, dwarf–galaxy sized objects can self– shield against the ionizing background, (2) collisional cooling processes at high redshift are more efficient, (3) the amplitude of the ionizing background at high redshift is lower, and (4) the ionizing radiation turns on when the perturbation that will become the dwarf galaxy has already grown to a substantial overdensity. We find that because of these reasons, gas can collect inside halos with circular velocities as low as vcirc ∼ 10kms−1 at z > 10. This result has important implications for the reionization history of the universe.

Numerical Simulations of High Redshift Star Formation in Dwarf Galaxies

We present first results from three-dimensional hydrodynamic simulations of the high redshift formation of dwarf galaxies. The simulations use an Eulerian adaptive mesh refinement technique to follow the non–equilibrium chemistry of hydrogen and helium with cosmological initial conditions drawn from a popular Λ-dominated cold dark matter model. We include the effects of reionization using a uni...

The Effects of a Photoionizing UV Background on the Formation of Disk Galaxies

We use high resolution N-body/gasdynamical simulations to investigate the effects of a photoionizing UV background on the assembly of disk galaxies in hierarchically clustering universes. We focus on the mass and rotational properties of gas that can cool to form centrifugally supported disks in dark matter halos of different mass. Photoheating can significantly reduce the amount of gas that ca...

Feedback from central black holes in elliptical galaxies . I : models with either radiative or mechanical feedback but not both

The importance of the radiative feedback from massive black holes at the centers of elliptical galaxies is not in doubt, given the well established relations among electromagnetic output, black hole mass and galaxy optical luminosity. In addition, feedback due to mechanical and thermal deposition of energy from jets and winds emitted by the accretion disk around the central black hole is also e...

Why do high-redshift galaxies show diverse gas-phase metallicity gradients?

Recent spatially resolved observations of galaxies at z ∼ 0.6–3 reveal that high-redshift galaxies show complex kinematics and a broad distribution of gas-phase metallicity gradients. To understand these results, we use a suite of high-resolution cosmological zoom-in simulations from the Feedback in Realistic Environments project, which include physically motivated models of the multiphase inte...

EMISSION-LINE OBJECTS FROM A PRELIMINARY UKST OBJECTIVE PRISM SURVEY

A visual search has been made of four fields using United Kingdom 1.2m Schmidt Objective Prism plates with a reciprocal dispersion of 1 180 A/mm at HP. Such plate material is ideally suited to searches for emission-line galaxies. We present a catalogue of 53 emission-line objects, which comprises 45 galaxies, where individual HI1 regions are resolved in 16 bright galaxies; 8 are emission li...
